Mary Tyler Moore was born in Brooklyn, on December 29 1939, though Moore’s family relocated to California when she was eight. Her childhood was troubled due in part to her mother’s alcoholism. The oldest of three siblings, she attended a Catholic high school and married upon her graduation in 1995. Her only child, Richie was born soon after. A dancer at first, Moore’s first break in show business was in 1955, as a dancing kitchen appliance Happy Hotpoint, the Hotpoint Appliance elf, in commercials generally broadcast during the popular TV program The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. She then shifted from dancing to acting, and work soon came, at first a number of guest roles on TV series, but eventually a recurring role as Sam, Richard Diamond’s sultry answering service girl on Richard Diamond – Private Detective, her performance being particularly notorious because her legs were shown instead of her face.

Although those early roles often took advantage of her willowy charms, Moore’s career soon took a more substantive turn as she was cast in two of the most highly regarded comedies in television history, which would air first run for most of the Sixties and Seventies. In the first of these, The Dick van Dyke Show, Moore played Laura Petrie the charmingly loopy wife of Dick van Dyke. The show became famous for its very clever writing and terrific comic first husband, and later married ad man.

After the end of the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore focused on movie making, co-starring in five between the need of the show and the start of Mary Tyler Moore Show including Thoroughly Modern Mills, in which she plays a ditsy aspiring actress and an inane Elvis Presley vehicle Change of Habit, in which she plays a nun to be and love interest for Presley.

Widely acknowledged as being much tougher and more high strung than her iconic image image would suggest, Mary Tyler Moore has had a life with more than the normal share of ups and downs. Both of her siblings predeceased her, her sister Elizabeth of a rug overdose in 1978 and her brother of cancer after a failed attempt at assisted suicide. She was also involved in politics and was described more as a liberal or moderate liberal. In the later years of her career, she was awarded with a prize for her entire career.

Mary Tyler Moore is mostly known for productions such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Ordinary People, Flirting with Disaster, Labor Pains, The Naked Truth, Mary, and Six Weeks. However, her TV appearances are numerous, too many to be named here. With an impressive career behind her, Mary Tyler Moore did not escape problems, especially health-related ones.

When she was only 33 years old, Mary Tyler Moore was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, so it is obvious that she is an insulin-dependent. Diabetes was one of the reasons why Mary Tyler Moore had to give up some of her favorite hobbies, like ballet dancing and horseback riding. This is because the disease was starting to affect her vision. In 1980, after a misfortunate accident, Mary Tyler Moore lost her son. Consequently, she underwent some serious drinking problems, so she had to enter the Betty Ford clinic, in 1984, accusing ‘social drinking habit’. After Mary Tyler Moore recovered, she started to focus on her career, once again. However, in 2002, while shooting Mary and Rhoda, Mary Tyler Moore broke her wrist and had to spend some time in the hospital.

After all, we are all humans. In fact, Mary Tyler Moore underwent a complicated brain surgery, to remove a tumor. You can see, thus, that even if Mary Tyler Moore had many health problems, she managed to get over them and to carry on with her successful career.

If you are a Mary Tyler Moore fan, you will enjoy reading these interesting facts about her life. She founded her own company all the way back in 1969. Thanks to the success of her career and company, she was able to sell it in 1990. In the early 1960s, she smoked a lot of cigarettes. Fortunately, she has since quit. At the start of the 1990s, she got breast implants. However, because she experienced so many problems and pain with these implants, it didn’t take long for her to have them removed.

One of the reasons that Mary is such a strong person is because she’s had to deal with a lot of loss over the course of her life. In 1978, her sister passed away as a result of an overdose. Two years later, her son was killed when the trigger on a gun went off. While this may seem like a suicide, it was actually proven to be an accident. In fact, that specific gun was eventually pulled from shelves because of this issue with its trigger. Then in 1991, her brother also passed away.

An interesting story is how Mary met her current husband. As some fans may know, he is a doctor. What’s interesting is that Mary actually met him as a result of her mother being treated by him. Mary’s success as an actress was recognized in 1992 when she received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star. Finally, the place that Mary currently calls home is New York.

During the seven year stretch of the Mary Tyler Moore Show (September 19, 1970 – March 19, 1977), this American television sitcom pulled viewers by breaking down barriers week after week. From the very first moment this hilarious sitcom aired on on CBS, the public fell in love with the show's main character – an independent career woman who had never been married. Creators James L. Brooks and Allan Burns wanted to show a different portrayal of single women than what was currently being portrayed on national television.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show featured the joys and trials of Mary Richard, a thirty-something, single woman who moved to Minneapolis to start over, after breaking off an engagement with her boyfriend of two years. The show centers around television station WJM-TV and Mary's friends/coworkers: Her no-nonsense but lovable boss Lou Grant (Edward Asner); enduring, charitable news-writer Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod); a simple-minded clown-like anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight); her best friend, neighbor, and ex-New Yorker Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper); and their self-absorbed landlady, Phyllis Lindstorm (Cloris Leachman) and her sassy daughter Bess (Lisa Gerritsen).

For three years straight, 1975, 1976, and 1977, the show won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series. Receiving high marks and critical acclaim, long after the final episode aired, the show continued to receive praise from critics. In fact, in 2003, USA Today named the show "one of the best shows ever to air on TV." TV Guide chose a Mary Tyler Moore Show episode as the best TV episode ever in 1997. And then, Entertainment Weekly named the opening show credits (Mary's infamous hat toss), as the second greatest moment in television history.

Some of the actors and actresses that have worked hard over the last few decades have really deserved to be a household name. Knowing that every person in the house would know exactly who you where talking about meant that they were a very popular celebrity indeed. Mary Tyler Moore has been an actress in many different sitcom episodes as well as a few movies here and there. Ladies like her have such a great reputation that they are always being published in magazines, quoted and admired by all of their fans. The Mary Tyler Moore Show which was a sitcom about Mary herself started in 1970 and finished a steady seven years later. People were really into the slap stick humor when the show began however after seven years of the same routine the same old jokes became tiring.

Mary Tyler Moore played other parts as well including her character on the Dick Van Dyke Show where Mary played the role of his wife. She was employed in this show from 1961 to 1966 and the first year she was also a guest on The Tab Hunter Show. In 1979 the Mary Tyler Moore Hour can out on TV which was not a huge success like the Mary Tyler Moore show had been. Unfortunately for Mary at this stage she had to start looking for other work which came five years later with Heartbeats. Lately Mary has been on quite a few reputable shows in America which have kept her going in the Hollywood scene. This means that paid employment for this natural actress is something that comes easily. Not only in TV but also in movies we get to see Mary doing her acting which has kept millions of people entertained for many years.

Last year Mary appeared on the good morning America TV morning program where she talked to the hosts about life and her career. In 2008 Mary appeared on Opera as well as the Lipstick Jungle comedy which are two very popular programs. Her great acting has taken her even further before that with appearances in That 70s Show and also got to appear on the Dick Van Dyke Show revisited. The Ellen Show and the New York News have all had Mary Tyler Moore on their programs to find out what she is doing with her life so that the fans can get the updates right from the source.
